Safety Tips for Observing Coming Total Eclipse on April 8th, 2024

 

The total eclipse on Monday April 8, 2024 will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. The partial eclipse begins in Dallas, Texas at 12:23 pm CDT, the totality in Dallas begins at 1:40 CDT with the maximum totality at 1:42 CDT. Totality in Dallas ends at 1:44 pm CDT and the partial at 3:02 CDT. For Caribou, Maine, the partial begins at 2:22 pm EDT, the totality at 3:32 EDT.

 

During an eclipse, it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. When watching an annular solar eclipse directly with your eyes you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. Safe solar viewers are thousands of times darker and must comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard.

 

Please note that children must be supervised throughout the whole eclipse viewing period and they may use adult-size glasses only when they hold the glasses with both hands while viewing so as to prevent the glasses from falling off. And they should take a short break after every three minutes of continuous viewing.

It’s really pretty decent except for one thing.

I bought two of these for my basement and they do look great. They were easy to assemble and I’m happy with them. The problem is that the stitching on the fabric panels are almost the size of a machine basting stitch (which for non sewers means large temporary stitches). Because the panels are tight by design, the stitches had already started to come undone before I could finish assembling everything. Fortunately I can sew and I reinforced all the panels. I had to take the first ones back off the poles to do them but I did the second set before assembling. It’s really not a bad product for the money. It’s quality fabric and the design itself looks great. The stitching looks fine but it’s just not substantial enough for the purpose it is supposed to serve. I can’t imagine why it be sewn so insufficiently. I was able to resolve my issue because I can sew. I wasn’t planning on sewing nor did I really have the time. I could have made it myself but I didn’t want to and that is why I purchased this. I ended up using valuable time. The really unfortunate thing is, I have no other complaints. This is a manufacturing problem.
