"Chianti has long been one of the most popular wine styles on the planet and remains so today. Tuscany, its home is ground zero for good Sangiovese and 2020 was a superb vintage for the region. Fermentation was extended over fifteen days to ensure every ounce of flavour is crammed into the bottle and there was a further six months maturation. Again, great to see it under screwcap. Ruby/garnet in colour, this has lifted aromatics with notes of roast meats, leather, red fruits, warm earth, spices and tomato bushes. This is quite a savoury style, medium weight, and most appealing. The tannins are ever-so-fine but even so, there is substantial grip here and decent length. Attractive drinking over the next four to six years" Ken Garret, Wine Pilot
Complex and approachable, a great drop! Violets, liquorice, cherry and leather aromas flow to medium bodied palate where a subtle savoury spice, dried herbs and red berries is present.
Chianti remains one of the most lauded and long-lived wine regions in Italy specialising in the variety Sangiovese. This wine is sourced from a small grower in Chianti Rufina one of the highest and coolest parts of the region resulting in wines that are quite granite rich with a mineral edge and fine acidity. Whilst the majority of the region’s vineyard owners still sell their fruit to large wineries and co-operatives, an increasing number are opting to make small amounts of wine themselves, selling directly under their own label such as Maretti.
Traditionally vinified in small open stainless-steel fermenters, controlled to twenty-six degrees, and hand plunged daily with fermentation lasting fifteen days. Following fermentation the wine is aged for just over twelve months in large seasoned (2,000 litres) oak casks before bottling and a further six months maturation before release.
