They are definitely not real wood at all. They are cheap particle board with veneer. I would not have purchased had I read more reviews, BUT it is still beautiful, sturdy and does the trick. We can always cut our own shelves if we should so choose and re-use the very nice hardware. 4/5 for misrepresenting as real wood, but 5/5 for functionality and aesthetic.
