Dawn and dusk make the perfect time to shoot silhouettes, but you can achieve this look any time of day if you have a backlit subject and by adjusting your settings to underexpose as necessary.
You can further enhance your image by adjusting your white balance in camera to create a warmer or cooler image. In this image of a heron in flight the water is providing the backlighting and I have adjusted my white balance to a custom setting of 10,000 Kelvin.
