Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000 Open-Back Audiophile Headphones

Available at Vinyl Sound, Toronto's dedicated hi-fi specialist in Richmond Hill, ON, the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000 represents the pinnacle of Japanese open-back headphone engineering. Hand-assembled in Tokyo with a 58 mm driver extending to 50,000 Hz and a magnesium frame weighing just 270 g, the ADX5000 delivers a level of transparency, resolution, and tonal accuracy that sets a new benchmark for open-air dynamic headphones. Each pair carries a laser-etched serial number — a mark of the individual craftsmanship that goes into every unit.

Engineering behind the ATH-ADX5000

Audio-Technica's newly developed Core Mount Technology positions the 58 mm integrated driver unit at the optimal point within the housing, improving airflow efficiency for highly transparent mid and high frequencies alongside rich, precise bass. The driver integrates a tungsten-coated diaphragm, voice coil, baffle, and Permendur magnetic circuit into a single unit — eliminating the screw clamps used in conventional designs, reducing unwanted vibration, and lowering overall mass. The honeycomb-punched housing keeps the face fully open for natural ventilation while blocking side vents to prevent air pressure loss that can colour the sound.

Frequently asked questions

What type of headphone is the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000?
The ATH-ADX5000 is an open-back dynamic headphone. Its honeycomb-punched open housing allows air to flow freely around the driver for a natural, spacious soundstage — making it best suited to quiet listening environments rather than commuting or noisy spaces.

Does the ATH-ADX5000 require a headphone amplifier?
Yes. With a high impedance of 420 ohms, the ATH-ADX5000 is not well suited to smartphone or laptop outputs. A dedicated headphone amplifier or DAC/amp combination is strongly recommended to drive it to its full potential. At Vinyl Sound Toronto, our team can advise on suitable pairings.

What is Core Mount Technology in the ATH-ADX5000?
Core Mount Technology is Audio-Technica's proprietary driver positioning system that places the 58 mm driver unit at the optimal location within the housing. This improves airflow around the driver, resulting in more transparent midrange, extended high frequencies, and tighter bass reproduction.

Is the cable on the ATH-ADX5000 replaceable?
Yes. The ATH-ADX5000 uses Audio-Technica's A2DC (Audio Designed Detachable Coaxial) connectors, allowing the included 3.0 m cable to be detached and replaced with compatible aftermarket or balanced cables.

How does the ATH-ADX5000 compare to other flagship open-back headphones?
The ATH-ADX5000 competes directly with flagship open-back headphones from Sennheiser, Focal, and Audeze. Its key differentiators are the integrated driver unit design that eliminates screw clamps for lower vibration, the tungsten-coated diaphragm for faster transients, and a lighter overall weight of 270 g thanks to its magnesium frame.

What does Hi-Res Audio certified mean for the ATH-ADX5000?
Hi-Res Audio certification confirms that the ATH-ADX5000 meets the Japan Audio Society standard requiring transducer frequency response to at least 40,000 Hz. The ADX5000 exceeds this with a rated response of 5 Hz to 50,000 Hz, making it capable of reproducing the full extended frequency content of high-resolution audio files.

What material are the earpads made of?
The earpads and headband of the ATH-ADX5000 are made from Alcantara — a synthetic suede-like material prized in high-end audio and automotive applications for its soft texture, breathability, and long-term durability compared to leather or pleather alternatives.

Where can I buy the Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000 in Toronto, Canada?

Best Shampoo/Conditioner I Have Ever Used
Scent: Nettle, Scent: Nettle
I purchased the Nettle Shampoo in hopes of getting my hair back to health after frying it off with bleach. I used it for the first time today and it is my favorite thing I have ever purchased for my hair. The smell of this is divine. I am not a sweet gourmand fan and this is just the most fresh scent I ever smelt I think. It honestly smells like a high end salon shampoo/conditioner duo. That is my favorite part about this product. Second favorite is that it actually does work soooo well! I put in quite a bit of oils and hair care before washing my hair and all of those oils were removed without leaving any waxy greasy feel to my hair. I was concerned it wouldn’t come out because this shampoo is 99% lather free. But it worked SO GOOD! It doesn’t feel dried out and brittle either. It’s just perfect I can’t stress it enough. 10/10 I wish there were more way I can say how much I adore this product. I have very fine hair by the way and it doesn’t weigh it down. I will keep using this and will update in maybe a month with pictures! Here’s the update: I used the shampoo and conditioner for idk probably a month. I’m not really sure. BUT I still absolutely love it. In the pictures I am going to attach, you can see that I had a decent amount of growth (the hair from the root that looks gray). My hair is quite oily after other hair care products were added so that’s why it looks the way it does. One more thing, the shampoo is very drying on the scalp I have noticed a little bit of dandruff and itchiness right after washing but I believe my scalp is getting used to it now because it’s getting less and less noticeable after every use. Keep in mind my hair had been chemically treated during the first week of use multiple times including bleach and box dye so that’s probably why it was irritated. I still absolutely adore the scent and the way it leaves my hair feeling light and clean and shiny and SOFTTT!

Great product, poorly designed bottles.
Scent: Onion Unscented
I like this product! However, the bottles are heavy, bulky and awkward, what a waste of plastic. The design is poor. The conditioner top was broken, and the product was so thick it was very hard to try and get out of the unyielding bottle when I unscrewed it. Had to ask for a replacement. But it smells great and leaves my hair very soft. I had gotten one for my mother (87) but the bottle was a little much for her, too bad. There's less in it than what it looks like, as it has an inner, smaller container. A lot of trouble and cost to save a small amount of product.

Great product for damaged bleached hair
Scent: Keratin
Great shampoo and conditioner. Smooths the frizzy ends. I bleach my hair and I am unhappy that this product appears to have washed or altered the toner. I have platinum bleached hair and I put a pale blonde toner on it. I waited 4 days after I bleached and toned my hair to use your product and the end result was yellow hair not that beautiful pale blonde color. I will play around with purple shampoo and your product to see if I can find a happy medium because I do love the silky feeling on my damaged over-processed hair. Thanks for developing such a wonderful product for damaged hair

Shiny Hair? Yes please
Scent: Onion Unscented
I have used this product just a few times since buying it. It made my hair shiny and smooth. Very minimal frizz. I bought it after doing research on how women helped their hair before all these hair products came out and Onion water was one of the top answers. After believing that I wanted onion smell in my hair, I came across this product and it actually smells SO NICE. After blow drying my hair, my hair was fuller and bouncier. I saw a difference right away. I have seen less hair in my shower drain and I honestly couldn't be happier with this combo.

Excellent product at a very fair price
Scent: Caffeine
I have been using the caffeine version of this shampoo and conditioner for a little over three months. I like to give a new shampoo and conditioner about three months before concluding if it’s a hit or a miss. Originally, I was using the biotin version of this shampoo for approximately two years and was very happy with the results. I needed to reorder, so I was looking over the other options in this same brand. This brand is considered to be a good quality product. I did do a bit of research before originally purchasing the biotin version. The biotin version is a lightweight product that did not weigh my hair down with build up over several uses. I ended up needing to use a clarifying shampoo only about once a month, as opposed to once every week. I have very fine, thin hair and a lot of products I have tried over the years have not worked for me because of the heaviness that leaves my hair flat. I did not have this result with the Bellisso Biotin shampoo. Bellisso is very well priced, and in my opinion, is comparable to more expensive salon products. I do like to try new things, so trying a different version of a brand that I was already happy with seemed like it didn’t come with much risk. Comparing the two versions, biotin vs caffeine: The biotin option worked very well on my fine, thin hair. The shampoo had a bit of a lower amount of foaming, but it did get my hair clean. The biotin conditioner also worked well, and was easy to rinse out and did not leave a residue on my hair. The caffeine version is very different than the biotin version, but neither in a good way or a bad way. Just different. I noticed that much less product of the caffeine shampoo and conditioner is needed to get the job done. The amount of product needed is probably highly dependent on your particular hair, so keep in mind, I probably have less hair than most people. The shampoo foams ALOT. I didn’t mind this at all. Per the instructions on the bottle, you are supposed to apply and massage your scalp and rinse after 2-3 minutes so the caffeine can be absorbed into your scalp, so having that extra foaming helps. This is meant to stimulate circulation in the scalp, and promote hair growth. If you are the girl that is always in a hurry, this is probably not the version of this shampoo for you :) The caffeine conditioner goes a very long way, so best to start with half as much as you normally use and go from there. All in all, I’m happy with both versions and I would definitely consider trying another version of this brand. I would highly recommend this brand in whichever version suits your personal hair type and needs. The price is right, as is the quality.
