A comprehensive and thought-provoking work of cultural criticism investigating one of the most polarizing words in the English language.

Few words in the English language are as misunderstood as "like." Indeed, excessive use of this word is a surefire way to make those who pride themselves on propriety, both grammatical and otherwise, feel compelled to issue correctives.

But what the detractors of this word fail to understand is its true linguistic function and versatility--as an exclamation, a filler of space, a means of subtle emphasis, and more. "Like" may have started out as slang, but it is now an intrinsic component of fun, serious, and altogether nurturing communication. And like any colloquialism, the word endears the speaker to its audience; a conversation full of likes feels more casual, despite its content.

In this book, culture writer and editor for Dwell magazine Megan C. Reynolds takes us on a pop culture journey through the unique etymology and usage of this oft-reviled word, highlighting how the policing of women's speech is often used to undermine people who are traditionally seen as having less status in society--women, younger people, people from specific subcultures--and how, if thought about differently, it might open up a new way of communication and validation. Written in a breezy yet informative and engaging style, this is a must-read for anyone who considers themselves a grammarian, a lover of language, and an advocate for the marginalized in discussions of cultural capital, power, and progress.

This deep dive into sociolinguistics and pop culture reveals:

  • History of the English Language: Discover how "like" has been a part of English for centuries, long before the Valley Girls of the Sherman Oaks Galleria made it famous.
  • Sociolinguistics in Action: Explore the fascinating reasons why women and younger people are often linguistic innovators--and why their speech is so often criticized.
  • Word Origins and Etymology: Unpack the complex versatility of "like" as a discourse marker, a quotative, a hedge, and a tool for building connection.
  • Feminist Theory: A powerful argument for how, far from being a sign of insecurity, the word can be a tool for validation and wielding cultural capital.

Pleasantly surprised
I’m two jars in and love it. I do use Botox, retinol, a good face wash, wash moisturize twice daily, etc etc. I struggle with moisturizer because I’m prone to breakouts. Idk what it is about this one but my skin loves it. It feels refreshed and soft. Added bonus, my eyebrows and lashes have gotten longer and darker quick! Obviously we all respond differently to products but I’ll be keeping this in my rotation

A thick and rich cream that smooths on nicely!
So I jumped on the Korean skincare bandwagon and decided to purchase some of the DR MELAXIN Products to try! I read many good reviews and decided it was worth the money. This first product is the Dr Melaxin Calcium cemenrete calcium volume cream. It comes in a 1.76 ounce glass jar. On the label there is a lot of word descriptions so I will add a few: Ex volume firming, rebornic 10,000 ppm hydrolyzed elastin and collagen extract. I have photographed label for viewing. The directions indicate to "apply a small amount of cream onto your face especially around the under-eye area". I found the cream thick and rich and I used it in addition to another Dr Melaxin neck and face product so I concentrated on only neck and under eye area. It is neutral in scent and is very thick so it feels like it is absorbing nicely. I have been using it for about a month now and have definitely noticed some improvement in the neck area so i will continue to use and layer with other products. I do recommend this line as the ingredients seem effective so far!

Good product for face.
Great product. Works well with decreasing lines in face after half is used and with the serum. It does leave somewhat of a sticky (not grimy) texture which is uncomfortable if using at night.

Loose under eye skin tightened and brightened!
I love this cream! It makes a huge difference in the strength of the skin under my eyes and smooths the look and feel of the wrinkled skin under my eyes. It brightens my under eye circles. I gave 4 stars because if you use too much it will start to roll off almost like skin does when it sheds or when you exfoliate. I use less now and it’s perfect.

Working on Deep Wrinkles Great Results
I really like this product, it’s been working well on deeper wrinkles, especially on my forehead and around my smile lines. With consistent use, I can see a noticeable improvement in how my skin looks. The texture feels hydrating and smooth, and it absorbs nicely without feeling heavy. It leaves my skin feeling softer and more refreshed after each use. I also like that it helps with overall skin appearance, making it look more even and a bit more radiant. Minor note: Results take consistency, so it’s best to use it regularly to see the full effect. Overall, this is a great product for targeting fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Hydrating, easy to use, and delivers visible improvements over time.
