Visions of the Future by Architects and Artists
Edited by Lydia Yee, with Cameron Foote and Trinidad Fombella. With an essay by Pedro Gadanho.
Ten experimental propositions from leading artists, architects and other cultural practitioners respond to urgent issues we face in the twenty-first century. Using strategies as diverse as digital modelling, hand drawing, poetry and screenshots, they imagine scenarios in which queer desire, house music and fracking meet on a mountainside; grief and microbes generate new possibilities for housing; or machines dispense objects and emotions to support our place in the technological world of tomorrow.
Is This Tomorrow? takes as its model Whitechapel Gallery’s landmark exhibition and publication This Is Tomorrow (1956), which featured contributions from leading architects, painters and sculptors working collaboratively in small groups. Re-inventing the format for today are: 6a architects, Adjaye Associates, Andrés Jaque / Office of Political Innovation, APPARATA, Rachel Armstrong, Rana Begum, Cao Fei, David Kohn Architects, Mariana Castillo Deball, Cécile B. Evans, Farshid Moussavi Architecture, Simon Fujiwara, Kapwani Kiwanga, Marina Tabassum Architects, mono office, Hardeep Pandhal, Amalia Pica, Jacolby Satterwhite, Zineb Sedira and Tatiana Bilbao Estudio. The catalogue presents each group's process of design and collaboration through plans, sketches and photographs, plus accompanying explanatory texts.
