artist biography
Nils Ryndel was born on October 29, 1917 in Vänersborg. He was a Swedish painter, art historian and museum director.
Ryndel earned a degree in Philosophy at the University of Gothenburg in 1947, and then studied art under the supervision of Axel Romdahl. Ryndel worked in oil, watercolour and collage. In 1947 Ryndel began work as a writing assistant at the Gothenburg Art Museum. He became the museum's curator in 1954, a post which he held until 1982. When the Gothenburg Art Hall was incorporated into the art museum in 1967, he also became his first exhibition curator; he remained on that post until he was succeeded by Bo Särnstedt in 1972. As curator of the Gothenburg Art Museum, he was responsible for the modern art department. He built up the museum's collection of contemporary art, including a number of Spanish and British works from the 1960s. He wrote several books published by the museum including ‘Modern Scandinavian Painting’ published in 1952. He also designed the information sheets that were placed in the museum halls and engaged in the educational activities. He was married to the sculptor Margareta Ryndel and the two exhibited regularly throughout their careers.
Ryndel had a retrospective exhibition in Gothenburg in 2006 where works from 1950 to 2005 were shown. Examples of works by Ryndel are in public collections in Sweden including the Gothenburg Art Museum and the National Museum in Stockholm.
He passed away on February 21, 2008 aged 90.
