Antique Sentimental Intaglio Signet Ring

A truly remarkable antique signet ring, centred around an exceptional Georgian carnelian intaglio that is as much a work of art as it is a piece of jewellery.

The large carnelian panel dates to the Georgian era and has been carved with extraordinary detail. At its centre, two birds are depicted tying a knot together; a beautiful and unusual symbol of unity. Beyond them sails a ship and below waves crashing. Maritime imagery was often associated with loved ones separated by distance.

Encircling the scene is the French motto 'Le Plus Loin Le Plus Serré' Often interpreted as' The further apart, the closer bound' the sentiment speaks of affection that remains (or grows) strong despite separation. A fitting accompaniment to the imagery of the birds and ship.

At some point in its history, this remarkable intaglio was mounted into a later handmade signet ring setting. While newer than the carving itself, the mount is still most likely antique in age and has been beautifully designed to showcase the historic seal. The substantial mount gives the ring an impressive look, weighing over 13 grams and providing a satisfying feel on the hand.

The rich orange red tones of the carnelian glow beautifully in the light, highlighting the extraordinary depth and crispness of the carving.
