Rond 1955 werd Stekelenburg lid van de Liga Nieuw Beelden, een kunstenaarsvereniging waar de meeste modernistisch werkende kunstenaars en ook de oud-Cobra-leden zich in die tijd bij aansloten. Hij exposeerde in 1955 bij de beroemde galerie Marcel Bernheim in Parijs
