In technisch opzicht was elk vorig album van het stralende en zware Franse trio SLIFT een fantasie — een compositie van genres en vormen die de band in staat stelde te improviseren en op thema's te jammen tot ze samen de ruimte in leken te spiraliseren. Hun veelgeprezen derde album, Ilion uit 2024, was een sciencefictionverhaal opgebouwd uit verkennende escapades van 10 tot 13 minuten, vaak beginnend met doommetal of stonerrock voordat ze vrijuit tolden naar een glorieuze instrumentale vergetelheid. Maar, met een vleugje bewuste ironie, heet het vierde album van SLIFT daadwerkelijk Fantasia. Het is hun meest gestroomlijnde en directe plaat tot nu toe. Het is ook hun meest meeslepende album tot nu toe: een doelgerichte saga over het overwinnen van internationale ontreddering, gebracht door een band die gas geeft en daarbij geen seconde verspilt.

Hoewel alleen Jean en bassist Rémi Fossat familie zijn, is SLIFT in essentie een band van broeders. Ze zijn al sinds de middelbare school bevriend met drummer Canek Flores, en 2026 markeert hun tienjarig jubileum als trio. Ze repeteren met religieuze regelmaat in een kelder op het platteland bij Toulouse, in de jamruimte waar ze lang hebben toegegeven aan hun neiging tot langdurige verwondering. Maar ze bouwden de nummers van Fantasia anders op. Jean begon veel van de nummers alleen en bracht ze vervolgens snel naar de kelderrepetities met een duidelijk en beknopt idee van hoe hij ze voor zich zag. Tegen de tijd dat ze de Franse noordgrens overstaken naar België om op te nemen in de enorme liveruimte van Daft Studios, hadden ze een strakke set van slanke, wendbare en krachtige nummers.

De enorme invloeden van de band zijn duidelijk: het album roept associaties op met een losgeslagen Clutch, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, de Sovjet-schrijver Michail Boelgakov, Pink Floyd en Sabbath uit het Master of Reality-tijdperk. Het geluidstapijt wordt versterkt door de vakkundige mix van Kurt Ballou (Converge, Cave In, High on Fire). Het ontbreekt de nummers niet aan de complexiteit of intensiteit die SLIFT tot een rijzende ster in de zware muziek hebben gemaakt; ze hebben simpelweg nieuwe manieren gevonden om de complexiteit van hun verleden in elk stuk te verweven, als een wandtapijt dat elke keer dat je kijkt een nieuwe laag onthult. Daarmee bieden ze een bevestigende en dringende boodschap: Samen kunnen we de tijden waarin we leven nog steeds veranderen.

Het is tegenwoordig vreselijk makkelijk om je machteloos te voelen. Op Fantasia rekent SLIFT direct af met de moderne overvloed aan wreedheid en absurditeit, of het nu gaat om onverschilligheid voor onze thuisplaneet of voor elkaar. Maar deze acht nummers gaan over het vertrouwen in een verborgen kracht om terug te vechten; over het geloven in een wereld waarin iets dat we nog niet kunnen verwoorden of definiëren niet alleen een manier biedt om de status quo te verstoren, maar misschien zelfs volledig te vernietigen. SLIFT is luid, zwaar en agressief in deze anthems. Ze bereiden zich voor op een strijd die we volgens hen nog steeds kunnen winnen.

This book is very useful to prepare people for marriage and I would recommend it for teens (even if they're not in a relationship), engaged couples, and even those already married since this provides realistic information about love and that not everything in a relationship is easy. It also helps people understand and attempt to loosely preset chores around the house and understand what to do with the extra money earned that isn't needed for bills. While I was already aware and have read about the 5 love languages, that is only briefly covered in one chapter while the rest provides other information so if you already read the 5 Love Languages book understand that there is a lot more involved in this book than that concept. The concept that I want to highlight in this book that I haven't read about before was the 5 Different Ways to Apologize. Increasingly, I think people need to be aware that what we consider to be a 'sincere apology' isn't necessarily the same as everyone else's though there are 5 of them that are fairly common. I was surprised when I found what I thought to be a sincere apology was listed word-for-word! This concept alone can be applied to anyone you socialize with and I especially recommend this piece if you are having apology problems between your friend, significant other, coworkers, and/or boss. Teens and those single will be able to learn a lot from this book, especially to realize that people, on average, are no longer "falling in love" within two years of the relationship and I think this would help them understand that relationships take a lot of work even when it's not convenient for you. Giving them an understanding of how to be flexible when apologizing and to know that people feel loved according to different love languages will make them more aware of how to improve their friendships and relationships in the future. Finally, there is reinforcement in being willing to do chores even if they're not popular and generally establishing healthy spending habits. I personally found this book to be thrilling and Gary Chapman successfully backs up some of his findings with Psychological research and definitions. I loved it so much that I read it in one sitting and now I'm getting my teen friends and budding couples into reading it. Awesome book; give it a try if you haven't already! (:

We thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, but what really made it interesting and kept us flipping the pages were the little anecdotes that were shared about other couples. Listening or reading their experiences really helped us relate to the situations that were being explained. We also liked the "Talking it Over" segments at the end of each chapter. Those we extremely useful when it came to understanding all the information that was just handed to us in the previous reading. I can not stop telling people about this book. I already have my sister and her husband reading it and it has greatly improved their relationship now after almost 4 months of marriage. I have also recommended it to each of my parents and my fiancé's parents as well because I know they could greatly benefit from it as I did. Thank You!
