Nadat hij halverwege de jaren vijftig vroege bop-klassiekers zoals Afro-Cuban en ‘Round About Midnight At The Café Bohemia voor Blue Note had opgenomen, maakte trompettist Kenny Dorham in 1961 een bezielde terugkeer naar het label met Whistle Stop. Het album bevat zeven eigen composities van Dorham, uitgevoerd door een hardbop-kwintet van wereldklasse met Hank Mobley op tenorsaxofoon, Kenny Drew op piano, Paul Chambers op bas en Philly Joe Jones op drums. Inventieve stukken zoals "Philly Twist", "Sunset" en "Sunrise In Mexico" bieden volop inspiratie en leiden de muzikanten langs uitdagende paden.
