In his unmistakeable monochrome style, Connolly has revisited his own original style with the return of black and white drawings. While there’s pathos and darkness, the humour and wit reflected in “Drunk Donkey” is a true contemplation of Connolly’s character. Donkeys, which have been featured previously in Billy’s art, are “endearing kind of funny” according to the artist, who owned two donkeys when he lived in Scotland. Reminiscing of how they used to escape the garden and run down to the village, “Drunk Donkey” happened very naturally as Billy started drawing and it “just became a donkey”. “They're lovely, they're friendly, they're like dogs. They cling to you; they've got a real tie to human beings. And I loved them”.
