在沙漠那頭的皇宮裡，王后希望能夠延續自己的美貌，因此派採藥人森林尋找靈藥。這天，採藥人正在深山裡採藥時，不慎跌落河流之中，危急之時，九色鹿救了他的性命。採藥人希望可以報答九色鹿的救命之恩，而九色鹿只要採藥人不說出他的行蹤就好。但採藥人並沒有信守諾言，反而引來了一場災難……
採藥人破壞了與九色鹿的約定，將其神祕的行蹤透露給愛美想要鹿皮衣裳的王后。這個人會得到懲罰還是原諒呢？王后又會有什麼樣的後果呢？
《九色鹿》是釋迦牟尼佛前生的故事，在敦煌石窟裡還保存了這個故事的石刻畫。作者以玄鳥（太陽鳥）──第三人稱的角度重新詮釋這個的故事，透過採藥人、王后與國王，詮釋失信、貪婪與盲目所帶來的後果。讀來具有新意與深意，搭配黑色類剪影風格的典雅插畫，營造出一種令人耳目一新的優美氛圍。
